Frequently Asked Questions about JumboMax® Grips.

Are JumboMax Grips legal?

Absolutely! The USGA has ruled that our current sizes, the JumboMax Medium, Large and XL grips conform to USGA rules for golf equipment and are 100% legal in all tournaments and sanctioned events.

How do I select the best JumboMax Grip size for me?

JumboMax Grips are available in 3 sizes which generally correspond your golf glove size (Medium glove = Medium grip, etc.) A quick reference chart is available or you may download and print our hand chart. Just be sure to print the hand chart at 100% actual size and do not choose "shrink to fit" in your printer settings. If you are unsure, order a trial kit. Any unused grips can be returned for full credit towards another size or refund.

How big are JumboMax Grips compared to a standard golf grip?

As a reference point, a commonly sold "midsize golf grips" is about 1/8 inch larger than a standard grip. JumboMax Grips are +5/16 , +11/32 and +3/8 inches respectively, so even our medium grip is probably larger than what you are using.

I've always thought standard golf grips felt too small, but I've heard a larger grip will cause me to push the ball.

JumboMax Golf Grips are engineered to fit your hands much more comfortably allowing your hands to work more efficiently. In addition, the larger diameter increases surface contact and allows you to use light grip pressure which helps you square the club face at impact. Our extensive testing confirms golfers using JumboMax Grips usually hit longer, straighter shots.

Many people, including golf professionals, are taught that a larger grip will cause you to push or fade the ball. They tell us this all the time when they approach us at a demo day. We simply tell them, "hit them". After hitting a few shots with them, they are suprised by how comfortable they feel and how well they perform.

How do JumboMax Grips wear, compared to other grips?

JumboMax Grips are a very high-quality grip. All grips wear over time and need to be replaced, but since your hands are not slipping with JumboMax Grips, they will outlast most standard-sized grips. Many people also find they can play without a glove and like the added feel around the greens.

Are these grips just for high-handicap players?

Most definitely not. Golfers of all levels are using and having great results JumboMax Grips. It's a matter of what feels comfortable for you. We have many high-level players using them who used to fear hooking their shots, especially with their driver. Our grips help quiet the hands so they can really go after their drives without fear of a severe hook.

What about swing weight?

Switching from a regular grip to a larger than jumbo grip will lower the club's swing-weight. But not as much as indicated by a swing weight scale with a 14-inch pivot point.

Here's an example of what can go wrong due to the use of an industry-standard 14-inch pivot point swing-weight scale. Say you've got this driver that you really like. The swing weight is just perfect for you. You want to replace the regular grip with a jumbo. So the fitter first measures the swing weight of the club to be D4. The jumbo grip is installed and the club now measures at a D1 swing weight. To restore the D4 swing weight, the fitter applies lead tape to the bottom of the driver head. You go out to the range and find that the club just doesn't swing right. The club feels "too slow". What happened?

Switching the grip from a regular to a jumbo appeared to lower the swing weight of the club by three units, according to the swing-weight scale. But that reading is false due to the fact that the change in mass occurred within the 14-inch pivot point. I.e., the scale saw the entire weight of the grip to lie on the butt end of the pivot point. But that's not where your hands actually rotate. On the driving range, only about half of the mass of the jumbo grip resides above your pivot point and almost as much of the grip's mass actually rests below your pivot point, almost fully cancelling out! In other words, switching from a regular grip to a jumbo grip doesn't really change the "feel" of a club during a swing. yet, the swing weight scale suggests that the change does have an effect.

Fortunately, there is no permanent damage. Most or all of the lead tape is removed and the club's "feel" is restored to normal even though the swing weight is now D1 and not D4! © Leaderboard.com. Used with permission. Read more at www.leaderboard.com.
